A psycho-physiologist experiments with drugs and a sensory-deprivation tank and has visions he believes are genetic memories.
I found 'Altered States' to be a fascinating blend of hard science and psychological horror that really appealed to my biochemical engineering background. The film's exploration of consciousness research and sensory deprivation experiments felt grounded in real scientific concepts, even as it ventures into surreal territory. William Hurt delivers a compelling performance as a scientist whose obsession with altered consciousness leads him down increasingly dangerous paths.
While the visual effects and body horror elements were impressive for their time, I felt the film's ambitious ideas sometimes got lost in the more fantastical sequences. The themes of human evolution and the nature of consciousness reminded me of what I loved about '2001: A Space Odyssey,' but the execution felt less refined. Still, it's a thought-provoking piece that explores the intersection of science and spirituality in ways that kept me engaged throughout.
