Saoirse Ronan, Laurie Metcalf, Tracy Letts
2017
A fiercely independent teenager tries to make her own way in the world while wanting to get out of her hometown of Sacramento, California, and to get away from her complicated mother and recently-unemployed father.
Absolutely adored this slice of life gem, dripping with that '90s nostalgia. Greta Gerwig's directorial debut is a treasure trove of sharp wit and heart-pounding authenticity. Saoirse Ronan serves up heaps of charm as Christine 'Lady Bird' McPherson, navigating the rocky waters of high school and the bittersweet ache of growing up. It's a cinematic love letter to Sacramento, but also to every place that shaped us. The soundtrack is on fleek, and I can't help but get lost in the aesthetic of those high school corridors and sunlit backyards. Definitely struck a chord with my own memories of youth.
Watching 'Lady Bird' felt like getting a heartfelt letter from a dear friend. Saoirse Ronan's portrayal of a high school senior grappling with growing pains and family dynamics was both poignant and humorous. Greta Gerwig's screenplay struck a perfect balance between the mundane and the monumental moments of teenage life. Laurie Metcalf's performance as Lady Bird's mother was a standout, capturing the complexity of maternal love and frustration. This film gently nudges you to reflect on your own experiences with family and personal growth.
