A scientist's drive for artificial intelligence takes on dangerous implications when his own consciousness is uploaded into one such program.
I had high hopes for this one given the fascinating premise of consciousness uploading, but unfortunately it didn't quite deliver on its philosophical potential. While Johnny Depp gave a committed performance and the visual effects were solid, the film felt like it was more interested in being a cautionary tale about technology than really exploring the deeper questions about digital consciousness and identity that could have made this truly compelling. The pacing dragged in several places, and I found myself wishing it had the tight focus of Ex Machina.
That said, there were some genuinely thought-provoking moments about the nature of human consciousness and what we might lose or gain in a digital existence. The themes definitely resonated with my love for mind-bending sci-fi, even if the execution felt somewhat scattered. It's worth a watch for fans of the genre, but it falls short of the masterful storytelling we've seen in films like Blade Runner 2049.
